#BookReview Halloween Night on Monster Island by Clark Roberts

Halloween Night on Monster Island is a fun, middle grade read with lots of spooky jump scares and hijinks.

If you like books like Goosebumps, this book is perfect for you! This middle grade read is fast paced, has some spooky moments, and is just all around fun. It gave me R.L. Stine vibes with how easy it is to read yet how much fun it is to keep reading. Thrills, chills and magical elements make this book a great read (in my eyes, anyways).

We open up with a roller coaster ride with a dash of humour. I can hear the “click, click, click” of the chain link, which is a nice touch. The Monster Island theme park is our setting, on Halloween night. Our leads have a creepy Uncle Victor who lets them join him on his island of scares. This island is in Michigan, on a island out on the water. That’s what makes it even spookier… You’re stuck on the island with no way home! Well, except a boat ride. Uncle Victor is super rich and can be quite the jerk to his workers – think Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde vibes (as the book suggests).

This book has our follow a group of cousins as they try to enjoy the park, but end up getting caught in a web of lies and deceit. Lots of spooky creatures come out of the fog to make their lives miserable! Werewolf attacks, jump scares, witches and pranks are littered throughout this tale. Blood served in cups, gooey sandwiches… broken elevators, kids disappearing! So much happens in this transformation station of a book. The fantasy and magic twist at the end make it quite amusing, but it feels like it came out of nowhere.

Honestly, this is a great middle grade read! If you want a fun, Halloween-inspired tale then this book is perfect! It’s a G rated, fast paced, fun book.

Four out of five stars.
