The Book Review
Every Summer After by Carley Fortune is a wonderful journey across many summers following two star-crossed lovers.
Persephone (who goes by Percy) and Sam met when they were kids. They were destined to be, with summers of childish fun turning into a heartfelt romance. Like most childhood sweethearts, things hit a bumpy road and the two go their separate ways. Many years later when Sam’s Mom passes, Percy finds herself at the funeral and the two’s chemistry is undeniable. Their connection to each other hasn’t left, even though Percy’s relationships are all over the place and Sam’s seems pretty set in stone. Throw in a sexy brother, a best friend who might not have the best in mind, and lots of horror movie references, and you’ve got one incredible contemporary romance for the ages (pun intended).
I really liked this book! It started off a little slow, but once I got into it I couldn’t put it down. It became a binge-worthy obsession where I wanted to sneak away from all of my responsibilities and read. The romance in this book starts at PG but grows into an adult-centred love fest. These characters who you that love can be messy and complicated, but with a little work we can work it out.
This book has two common tropes but mashes it up just right: Friends to lovers to start, and then second chance romance to balance out the finale. It also has so many horror references and summer vibe moments that it felt like the perfect summer going into fall read. There are some sad moments because there’s a funeral and death is talked about, but it didn’t affect my opinion of the story at all. It was just another hurdle for our love birds to get through.
If you’re looking for a happily ever after novel that will remind you that true love exists, this book is for you. It’s the best kind of romance that packs the drama and pulls at your heartstrings but doesn’t destroy your entire being leaving you crying at the end. This book is emotional and sweet, funny but intense, and very honest and vulnerable. It’s a mashup of real life but in a fictional and lonely way. I felt like these could have been my college buddies. Overall, such a great read if you want a raw and emotional book but also all the romance.
Other highlights of this book:
- Canadian setting – I love me a Canadiana book!
- Multiple timelines (young Percy and adult Percy)
- Beautiful cover
- Sam is a giant jerk at times who needs therapy
- The big twist… I didn’t like and it kind of glossed over it
- Communication… These characters need it. A lot of it.
- Sam’s girlfriend kind of just disappears and isn’t mentioned again at one point…
- Percy could be a much stronger female lead, but she’s a little weak
I am so impressed with Carley Fortune and I hope to pick up many books by her in the future. What a hidden gem! I highly recommend this book to contemporary romance fans.
Five out of five stars!
