I’m Not Your Manic Pixie Dream Girl by Gretchen McNeil – Book Review

The Book Review

I’m Not Your Manic Pixie Dream Girl by Gretchen McNeil brings back those old glamorous teen rom-coms to mind, like Mean Girls, John Tucker Must Die, She’s the Man, and Easy A.

I’m honestly surprised this book isn’t super popular! I found this YA brought back to many of the 2000s vibes that teenagers love. Imagine Mean Girls, but instead of popular girls we have manic pixie dream girls. You remember 500 Days of Summer, right? Elizabethtown, Scott Pilgrim Vs the World, Amelie, Annie Hall, Juno, Forgetting Sarah Marshall? Well, this book does a deep dive into the high school culture of those girls who change themselves to be a hyper-lovable weirdo.

What happens when a math geek falls in love with a boy? Well, he finds a new one and she has to win him back. How? With a mathematical formula. If she and her two besties change their personas into something people like, that’ll win them all over… Right? The math says yes, and it seems too good to be true… it’s working. Until it suddenly doesn’t. Beatrice finds herself in quite the mess when one of her best friends hates the new personas (but seems to enjoy the attention secretly) and the other thrives. She also begins learning more about herself in the process. As we all know, changing yourself to being someone you are not isn’t all it’s cracked up to be… and her new persona seems to mess everything up. Now she has to find herself and win her friends back.

This book was previous. If you don’t take it too seriously and enjoy the ride, it’s perfect! I was whisked away by the teenage drama of this book and I had a fun time. I ended up binging it because it was fun and a bit zany. It’s the chick flick I loved in the 2000s but in book form, so what else can a reader like me ask for? Now, much other than more books by this incredible author. I think the book came out at the wrong time, which is why the hype isn’t as high. Regardless, this is a must-read on my shelf and I will definitely recommend it! If you love 1990s and 2000s rom coms, this book is for you!

Also, for a 2016 book, this is SUPER diverse and brings up the problems with stereotypes. High fives!

Four out of five stars!
