#BookReview School Ties by Tamsen Parker

Time for a little #throwbackthursday for my next February Valentine’s Day special! This is one of my original reviews of an amazing book by Tamsen Parker. The structure and formatting is a little different because it’s a flashback to what I thought might be a good look for my blog. I hope you enjoy the review and the throwback!

Just when you think Tamsen Parker has reached her peak, she introduces a new forbidden fruit that left me breathless.

Title: School Ties Author: Tamsen Parker Date Read: August 21st-September 6th, 2016 Date Reviewed: September 11th, 2016 Spoilers Ahead?: Yes! Introduction: I love Tamsen Parker (and that’s no secret) and every time she writes another book I am grasping desperately to try to get a hold of it. So when I was able to get my hands on School Ties (since Tamsen is totally amazing!!) I almost fangirled myself to death. And then I read the book, and I was silently begging Tamsen to stop (and by stop, I mean stop giving me a heart attack with her super sexy stories!). She stepped her game up with this novel! A pinch of BDSM and sexy time, a few splashes of ex drama, a handful of strong characters and then she added dump truck of forbidden romance. Quick Summary: Erin Brewster begins to teach at a boys boarding school – Hawthorn Hill. She notices a certain student, Zach Shepard, and instantly sparks flash. Their eyes linger over the school year, and feelings flutter. Flash forward three years after Zach’s grad, and here is he back to tempt Erin. They haven’t forgotten each other, and soon enough they’ll be begging for each other’s company… Evaluations: I had no words when I first finished this novel. I had to wait a few days to even write this because my brain couldn’t wrap around how Tamsen stepped her game up. Not only did she include her typical, hot, sexy BDSM time, but she added a flicker of forbidden romance as well? Tamsen is doing what most writers don’t – she’s growing!! And that makes my inner fangirl super happy and desperate to get her writing more! Or at least get her books more recognition!! The book was told in both Erin and Zach’s point of view. This gave an added umph to the story since we got to see both of their thoughts and not just one. It opened up the readers to the thoughts of the characters, and we understood what was going on inside of their head. I typically don’t like multiple POVs in past books, but in this story it fit perfectly! I also enjoyed the realistic aspects of the story – Erin starts a new job and actually feels self conscious! I can’t list enough books where the characters are glowing and perfect the first day on the job. Every time I’ve done something new (new job, new school, etc) I am definitely not glowing with self confidence! Tamsen does a beautiful job showing this, and this makes Erin so much more relatable! The angst, drama and love in this story is just overall fantastic. Tamsen opens up more and explores! While there isn’t as much crazy BDSM/sexy time like some of her past books, it’s still great! Erin deals with drama before she meets Shep and that makes her grow as a character, so when the story finally progresses and we see more of adult Shep, we understand the struggles our main woman has dealt with. Overall, I loved it! It’s a step up in the plot and character building department! Plot: Tamsen’s plot building skills have definitely improved. While I love all of her old books (and their plots are uber sexy) there seemed to be more plot than sexy time in this novel! While I do love some great sex scenes, I love a wicked plot as well! Erin Brewster’s troubles before Shep are a bit drawn out and I wanted more Zach in those scenes, but it gave a beautiful insight into the character. We saw her struggles and into her mind. I liked understanding her instead of just sex scene after sex scene. To me, it made her more relatable than Tamsen’s past characters. I felt for Erin and I understood how she saw the world. When we got to Zach’s scenes, I felt like it was a little to late. I kept yearning and yearning for Zach and Erin to have some kind of fling or flirty scene before he left, but it didn’t happen. Yet Tamsen didn’t disappoint! When Zach was brought back, the sex scenes were super sexy and hot. The long, drawn out wait made those scenes even better. When Zach explains his life in a sex club (and how he’s a virgin? That was a strange twist) I wanted to read more about it. I wanted to see maybe a flash back chapter or an insight into that part of his memory. His explanations were so interesting, and I felt like his back story could have been a novel all on it’s own!! If anything, his back story felt out of place without the chapters to back it up, but Tamsen still made it work! I would love for Tamsen to make an ebook or side story explaining that, similar to how she made more books in India’s series to see other aspects of that world. Characters: Erin Brewster – She’s a realistic and relatable character, which is great for a sexy, BDSM book. She gets nervous and has second thoughts and deals with real issues. I loved that! She wasn’t just some sex toy in the book for the man. The woman tries her best when dealing with her issues in the first half of the book. While I’ve seen other reviewers put down this aspect of the story, I felt like it fit her character. She married a man to keep her job, because she’s young and wants her job. I know many people who are in new jobs and let themselves get pushed around because they need their job. She then stays with the man she marries so she can keep the job. While in real life I would have kicked that guy to the curb, she’s young and she’s really trying. Zach Shepard – Zach was an interesting character, and for a romance and BDSM book it was odd to read his POV, but that also made this book stand above the others. I didn’t expect to see his side of the story, but we did! As stated earlier I would have loved some more chapters relating to his back story. Him being a changed man was interesting, and makes sense since he went away to another school, but I would have liked to see more of it. He was definitely a hot character, and I could place his personality on a few guys I know, so relatable-ness was met on this character! Seeing Erin and Zach both work through forming a relationship was also nice, so I thoroughly enjoyed his character development. Themes/Creativity: I wouldn’t say there were any distinct themes in this novel (it’s a romance, BDSM type book) but there was creativity for days in this book! Seeing Erin’s issues before she meets Zach is definitely creative compared to other books. I’ve read many romance novels where the main character complains about her past issues, but I’ve never seen the book actually display them. I also really enjoyed seeing both Zach and Erin’s POV in this novel. I liked seeing Tamsen step up her game with adding forbidden romance with BDSM in this novel and I would love to see her experiment more with these different topics in future books! Uniqueness: I’ll combine the uniqueness with creativity together. Most of the unique aspects of this novel were also the most creative aspects. Strengths: Character growth, the plot, the realism of the situations in the story – these are all wonderful strengths in my eyes. I enjoyed Tamsen’s growth in writing, and I can’t wait to see more! Weaknesses: The lack of Shep’s background story felt like the biggest weakness. I would have liked to read more on that! It wouldn’t have added anything crazy to the novel and it wasn’t a necessity, but I would still like to read it! Score: 5 out of 5. Despite the little issues here and there, I loved the book. I didn’t really see any weaknesses while reading the book, it was only after when I thought about it and compared it to other novels that are somewhat similar that I started coming up with “problems”. Tamsen did a fantastic job, and I’ll be reading this book over and over again! Tamsen stepped her game up and did a wonderful job with this book! It’s an addicting read that I read in one sitting, and I couldn’t put it down. It’s rare for me to literally sit down and finish a book all in one sitting, I can name only two other books I’ve done that with – Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell and Hamlet by Shakespeare. That definitely puts Tamsen high in my books, when I literally restart the book on one day and finish it in that same sitting.

#BookReview Misadventures of the First Daughter by Meredith Wild and Mia Michelle

Geez Louise. If you’re looking for a super hot romance with lots of erotica and sex scenes littered throughout, with just a pinch of thriller in it, GRAB THIS BOOK.

I have a fond place for Meredith Wild. She is one of the authors that “introduced” me to erotica in romance. I wasn’t totally into erotica after reading Fifty Shades of Grey, but Meredith and a few other writers introduced me to how romantic and sexy erotica could be. It was only natural for me to want to pick up some more books by her and give them a chance.

Misadventures of the First Daughter is an excellent romp for you to thrust into (haha, puns!) and I’d highly recommend it if you like romance and erotica.

So, plot time:

Charlotte is the First Daughter and her parents are rather strict. She starts rebelling and seeking all the fun in the world, meanwhile Zane Parker, her bodyguard, watches on. She has always kind of liked him, and suddenly those sparks are flying. They get entangled in a romantic web that they might not be able to save… Especially since their love is forbidden.

This book can be touchy for some people. There’s hints of sexual assault in it, so be wary. Otherwise, it’s a great erotica that kept me stringing along the entire time. There’s just so much tension in it that it is impressive! I absolutely want to pick up more of this series, especially since it dabbles with other authors as well. This Misadventures series seems like it’ll be a great romantic series for anyone to pick up. Surely there will be an author you enjoy in this collection!

Overall, it’s a great read! I highly recommend my fellow romance and erotica lovers to give this book a go! Good job Meredith and Mia!

Four out of five stars.

#BookReview Michael James by Lisa Andrew

If you’re looking for a hot erotica that will leave you steaming up your house, pick this book up!

Michael James is a purely hot erotica following the Queen and her husband Michael James. The Queen is a CEO and she just got back with her husband, another prominent business figure with intriguing tastes. They have a Dom-Sub relationship, and tend to get into very naughty scenarios. This relationship isn’t easy, especially with Michael spying on his wife and her escapades. Michael is having some issues in the sex department (erectile dysfunction) which is causing problems in their open relationship.

This book is about domination and control in a celebrity like marriage. The couple explore various kinks and constantly tease each other. Michael crosses some lines, which the Queen is none to happy about, but they eventually get back to getting hot and heavy with each other. Boundaries are pushed and pulled and rubbed and everything in between. But there are secrets in this relationship too, which slowly unfold over the course of the book.

There’s lots of aggression in this book, and thankfully Lisa Andrew put a little disclaimer at the beginning of the book about consensual sex. People need to realize this is a work of fiction and for people’s fantasies, and it is not recommending being mean to your spouse and flogging them because you had a bad day. To add to the realness, there is sex therapy and the two deal with their problems.

This book is going to be in a niche market – you need to like erotica and BDSM relationships in books to enjoy it. I’m not the biggest fan of BDSM anymore, but I can totally appreciate it for what it is and shout to the hills that you need to read this book if you love erotica. It’s a lot more sex than plot, but that’s what some readers desire.

Overall, this book is a pure fantasy for erotical overs. I’d highly recommend it if you’re looking to add another erotica to your TBR shelf. Lisa Andrew has crafted a wickedly wild book!

#BookReview Naked 2 by Kay Brandt

Oh boy, they’re back!

Cadence has a chance to go back on the naked survival show that she survived last time around. She’s very tempted, especially since there seems to be something between her and Jackson, but her boyfriend and job might be left behind. Chris, her boyfriend, isn’t too comfortable with Jackson and Cadence’s closeness from the previous time around which makes this more difficult.

This book is a great sequel in this series, and it leaves me grasping for more. I’m truly intrigued if they will go back for the show or if something more will develop between Jackson and Cadence. It left on a bit of a cliffhanger though, which is going to drive me mad! I am so invested in these characters and I need to know what’s going to happen! That only happens when you’ve got some good quality writing, so kudos to Kay. Either way, I’m one hundred percent going to be sitting around and waiting for book three! Gimme more, to quote Britney Spears.

Kay is great at writing sexy erotica scenes, and this book is no different. The book is littered with erotic sex that will make you melt in your seat. Add in there’s a great plot that makes it not just a book of sex and you’ve got a real winner! This is how erotica should be – a great story to pull you in and some super hot scenes to keep you hanging on.

#BookReview At Mother’s Command 2 by Kay Brandt

At Mother’s Command 2 continues Max’s story of being whisked away to her biological Mother’s BDSM castle/resort. This time around, Max is essentially being held hostage and isn’t allowed to leave. She meets Neil, a man that I personally don’t trust but who knows, and begins to explore her sexuality a bit. Additionally, she demands the parents who raised her act like they were actually a couple which causes quite the stir. It seems the couple may actually explore these unearthed feelings for one another… despite both being involved with Sumera, Max’s Mother.

There’s more kink and sex in this book. Not only Sumera’s sex life, but some infant and degrading kink as well. While those aren’t my thing and I didn’t enjoy it as much, it’s definitely well written. Kay knows how to write her erotica really well! There will be readers who will eat this stuff up, pun intended.

I’ve very curious to see how the third book will go. I’d like to see Max develop and see what she decides. Will she accept her fate or escape from it all? The plot is just as good as the erotica in this series!

Four out of five stars.

#BookReview At Mother’s Command by Kay Brandt

At Mother’s Command by Kay Brandt is an erotic introduction to this wonderful series.

Max just turned eighteen years old, and learned that her Mother is not actually her biological Mother. Her parents whisk her away to a giant castle where she learns that her destiny is very sexual in nature. Her Mother, Sumera, is a powerful Dominatrix who runs a very sexual resort where adults can sneak away and explore their fantasies.

This book focuses on Max’s introduction to the world and some of the sexual deviancy going on behind the doors of the castle. It ends on a cliffhanger which made me very happy that I had the second book, but would have totally frustrated me as a reader if I didn’t have it. One thing I’m curious about is if Max will accept her role in this story or not… It seems like it can go either way at this point. I’m sure she will eventually be exploring her sexuality. The poor girl is basically being held hostage!

If you’re into BDSM novels, especially books with doms and subs, than this quickie erotic read will be perfect for you. It’s very hot and very dirty, exactly as a good erotica should be.

Four out of five stars.

#BookReview Hot for the Holidays by Marie Force, Tamsen Parker et. al

Happy Holidays! Merry Christmas! Happy Christmas! Merry Holidays!
To continue this amazing season of holiday books and cheer, check out a super sexy collection packed full of romance and sexy Santas!!

To begin with, I was not able to read all of the stories in this super sexy collection. I do plan on finishing it, but I figured this book deserved a review during it’s peak.

I originally picked up this book for free during a wondrous sale so I could read Tamsen Parker’s story. I’m a big fan, so of course I wanted to read about some sexy Santa/Elf play with a bit of a May/December romance. Gosh darnit, it was sexy and seriously silly. The amount of Christmas puns killed me. I’m not quite sure how she can mix ridiculously hot sex scenes with Christmas puns and make it work, but goshdarnit she did it!

Holly is home for the holidays and is working at her kinky sex play/dungeon where people hook up and play for fun. Her boyfriend is supposed to pick her up, but like most boyfriends who you go out with when you bounce off to post-secondary school, he turns out to be an absolute dick. He sends his Dad Cal instead and it’s slightly awkward. That is, until, Holly and Cal decide to have some dirty, sexy Santa-Elf play. It’s hot, it’s full of fa-la-la-la-la-la-ing puns and it’s a story I’d love to see expanded. I want to see the fall-out of Holly and her former boyfriend’s relationship SO BAD. Holly and Cal seem like a better couple anyways.

It took me a few days to read it, but not because it wasn’t good. I decided to drag it out to enjoy the fabulous-ness of Tamsen’s writing. Then, I stayed for the other stories because this anthology is so good!

In full, this collection has 13 sexy holiday stories to fill up your TBR. Some of my recent faves are apart of this collection (Skye Warren, Marie Force, & Noelle Adams) and they’re all short and sweet (or super naughty, whichever you prefer). If you are going to get anything out of this series, come for an author you’ve loved in the past and meet some new authors to binge in the future.

Five out of five stars!

#BookReview Simply Irresistible by Jill Shalvis

Simply Irresistible by Jill Shalvis is a fabulous romance novel.

When three sisters come back to Lucky Harbor to take over their deceased Mother’s former Inn, things go awry. The Inn is in shambles (both physically and financially) and the girls just can’t get along. We follow Maddie, a former L.A. resident who is running far away from her old job and ex, who seriously wants this Inn to get back on it’s feet. When she’s there, she almost runs over one sexy motorcycle rider who turns out to be more than what he says he is…

I really liked Maddie’s arc. She starts out as “The Mouse” and slowly works her way up to being a total bad a**. She has an attitude, knows what she wants and is working on making herself a stronger person. She absolutely deserves it after a trash of an ex. And lucky for her, Jax might be the man to help her realize love isn’t all that bad. Jax is sexy, a former lawyer and good with his hands (I mean carpentry… right?). He’s a character with lots of back story and isn’t the “perfect” man, which is why I loved him.

Oh boy! There is SO much going on in this book and I am SO frustrated it left on a cliffhanger. I need the next books in this series as soon as possible! I need to know what happens with Maddie, Chloe, Jax, Ford and every other kooky character from this series! Will Ford end up with Tara? I feel something heating up there. Will Chloe ever find romance during her asthmatic state (oh man, can I relate. I NEED HER STORY!)? Will Jax and Maddie end up happily ever after?! There’s so much going on and Jill has left me speechless!

If you like romance and drama, then this book is perfect for you! There’s a pinch of Christmas and comedy as well. Honestly, I wasn’t disappointed. I was expecting a boring, old, romance novel but I was left with an addicting, quick read that is making me absolutely desperate for more of Jill’s work. Seriously, it’s worth the read. The title is Simply Irresistible, and that’s just what this book is – irresistible.

Five out of five stars.

P.S. This book is TOTALLY R rated. It has some super sexy scenes that are not suitable for your PG-13 audience. Just an FYI for anyone looking for something totally contemporary – it’s not! This book gets hot and heavy!

#BookReview Gabriel’s Redemption by Sylvain Reynard

Gabriel’s Redemption is the third book in the Gabriel’s Inferno series by Sylvain Reynard.

The first two books in this series were real hits – they were dramatic, full of suspense and tension, and romantic. This book, on the other hand, was mostly full of sex scenes and Gabriel demanding that Julia have a baby.

In all honesty, I really wanted to like this book. I love Sylvain’s writing style and have fallen in love with his words. His stories are smooth as silk and feel like a master class in writing. But, this time around I felt like Gabriel was a giant jerk and Julia was putting up with it. Gabriel wanted a child and Julia didn’t, so they had a child. A woman was hitting on Gabriel and tried to woo him away, and that story line just… ended? I wanted to see more than it just suddenly end. It felt like it could have not been included and the story would have ended the same. Paul pining after Julia was also a story line that didn’t go very far. Rachel wanting a baby also felt like it was cut short. The entire ending felt suddenly rushed too! It felt like there was a lot of wasted potential.

I still loved the writing and I felt connected to this story. I like Gabriel and Julia’s story so I felt like I needed to know how it ended. There’s going to be another book in this series so I’m curious to see how Sylvain will make that story go. This book literally felt like Sylvain was answering some reader’s prayer to continue the story, but didn’t pack the punch that the last two books did. It was just a very long epilogue.

The highlights of this book are as followed: Julia’s Dad’s story arc, Julia’s lecture, the beautiful scenery described and the love story continuing.

That being said, I still liked it. All of the hype built up for this book was probably why it fell so hard for me. My expectations were way too high. This book is the honeymoon for Gabriel and Julia, not the finale. I truly hope the next book finishes off some of the storyline Sylvain opened up. Especially since this book was just one giant cliffhanger.

Three out of five stars.

P.S. The Superman and Lois Lane comments were really funny but felt out of place. I came for the love story and stayed for the comic book references.

#BookReview For Her Own Good by Tamsen Parker

Oh man, oh man, oh man! Another Tamsen Parker gem!!

This book is a 6 out of 5, but unfortunately that rating does not exist on this site so I guess I can settle with just a 5 out of 5.

Seriously though, this one was a DOOZIE!

Tamsen has amped up the plot, has some truly epic references and kept me hooked the entire time! Starla and Lowry (amazing names, by the way) are one incredibly interesting pair that make this book feel more than just a romantic, erotic tale. These characters felt real – mental health issues, sweet and seductive storylines and one heck of a finale! This book is just AMAZE-BALLS.

So, down to the actual plot – Starla was Dr. Lowry Campbell’s patient way back in the day (about 15 years if you are a numbers person) and suddenly he’s back into her life. Except, this time he’s not her doctor and is instead a sexy man she’s interested in. She liked him back then, but now the lines are blurred and it’s their chance to pounce at each other. Their romance is slow burn and faces many obstacles along the way. Starla has some mental health issues but deals with them like a champ. Lowry is an understanding man who is hella sexy and ready to be in her life.

If I have to summarize ALL of the amazing things I liked, here’s a list to start you off:

1. Lowry’s descriptions and accents and OMG Tamsen seriously made this man my dream man. She’s killing me! Reddish copper hair, smart doctor and the European twang… Ugh. SO SEXY.

2. This story has such a way with words – “Tongue like a whip” – seriously majestic. I loved some of the amazing phrases used because they added SO MUCH to this book. It felt like this book had attitude and was sassy at times. Example number two: “He deserves to have his heart cut out with a rusty spoon and fed to him.”

3. Star Wars references galore! “My enemies encased in carbonate” was the best gem, but there’s SO MANY.

4. “Daddy kink kryptonite” is the best way to describe this novel AND that’s a quote from the book!

5. Oh, and did I mention there’s a dominatrix? Oh yeah, this book is SPICY.

This slow burn novel is ridiculously amazing. Tamsen’s writing is only getting better and this book was seriously cool. Not all readers will like it – it takes about half the novel for the couple to get dealing with their romantic emotions – so readers who like quick, fast-paced romance might want to steer clear. There’s also talks of self-harm and suicide, so this book might be a little triggering for some.

Overall, I think this book is incredible! As I said, 6 out of 5 stars level good! I liked that Tamsen keeps taking risks with these stories. They are different, totally romantic and erotic and well written! What more can this reader ask for?

Five out of five stars!
