#BookReview In Her Court by Tamsen Parker

35652761

In Her Court by Tamsen Parker is a goofy, geeky read filled with

Tamsen Parker is not one to stick to the same plot over and over in every read, and that’s what makes this book so unique compared to the others. This time around, Tamsen has explored an F/F relation (or two females if you didn’t understand the acronym). Two girls at a camp fulfill a beautiful romance, in short.

These girls (Van and Willa) have character – one of them is getting a PhD, they are working at a tennis camp, and they aren’t your typical character without flaws and full of perfection. They seem realistic in the setting of this story! That’s a nice change from some of the F/F books I have read in the past – I like seeing characters who slowly build and get better throughout the story.

There is some R-rated language (a few F bombs) so if you don’t like any swears, beware! They aren’t dropped for no reason, they fit within the story, but know this book isn’t G rated. If you thought it was, you don’t know Tamsen’s writing very well…

Personal opinion: I felt like Nate and his character could have not been in the story and it would have moved just as well. Yes, he’s an introduction for both characters, but he didn’t seem wildly important – at least not to me. I would have liked to see a more interesting story line with him (a non romantic subplot, or something). I felt like there was more potential hiding in there. That being said, it wasn’t like he was supposed to be the main character of the story.

This wasn’t my favourite Tamsen Parker book (and by that I mean her super steamy romances), but it definitely ranks up in my favourite romances. I felt the introduction to the characters wasn’t the best (we found out a bit to much to fast, in my opinion) but it was still fitting and made the story work. That’s me being a picky Tamsen Parker/romance fan and nothing more. It doesn’t hurt the story, I just feel like it wasn’t Tamsen’s best out of all of her books (I remember a time when she only had three books out…just saying..now she’s all busy writing and forming a career ;D).

I found this was definitely a step out of Tamsen’s wild BDSM/crazy sexual books and more of a contemporary romance (as it says on Goodreads, which I noticed AFTER I read it – do your research first guys! Then you’ll know what you’re getting!). As a contemporary romance, it’s fantastic! It’s not the best romance in all of the world that I’ve ever read, but it’s a worthy read. A very worthy read indeed! There is still some steamy sexy scenes, just not as crazy wild as her other novels. But it’s still uber sexy and well written! And there is LOTS of it…Almost to much. At one point, there seems to be sex scenes in every single chapter!

Side Notes: I love geeky references and Star Wars, Wonder Woman, Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink, Sixteen Candles and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off was present in this novel. Bonus points for Tamsen!

Overall, this book was great – it just wasn’t my favourite Tamsen Parker book (but can they all really be my favourite? Let’s be honest). This book is still a worthy read and I would suggest it to those looking for some steamy romances, but definitely pick up Tamsen’s other books while you’re at it. These books show how she can not only write crazy steamy BDSM, but lovely contemporary romances and some not so safe for work styled novels.

Four out of five stars.

Thank you Tamsen Parker for being amazing (as always!) and sending me a copy of this book!!

#BookReview Once Upon a Vampire by Mari Mancusi

34614312

To say I was a huge fan of the Blood Coven novels when I was younger would be an understatement. I remember going to high school sporting events and having to sit on a bus for hours to get to our location so we could compete – so of course I would brings books by authors such as Mari Mancusi, Zac Brewer, Ellen Schreiber, and other fantastic YA novelists. I was heartbroken when the series ended and I was hoping one day Mari might come back to it.

AND GUESS WHAT?! SHE DID!!

Once Upon a Vampire is more of an adult novel than YA (although, I’m sure YA fans could pick it up and not be totally disgusted with it. This book is a great continuation).

While it might not be a direct continuation with our former leads, this book environment wise is similar. Hannah and Logan follow a similar path to our former leading ladies and their respective fellows. Rayne is a big part of this story and Jareth also appears, but they aren’t our main leads – even if Rayne takes a bigger role than expected. Magnus is also referenced, but does not make an appearance.

I was definitely hooked to this book – my book cravings had been something easy to read, sexy with a dash of fantasy, and nothing mind blowing (like Game of Thrones), so this book fit the bill. It’s super easy to read, it’s easy to fall in love with these characters and the nostalgia is perfect for any previous YA reader who was as obsessed with Mari’s work as I was.

<spoiler>My “problems” with the novel – the conversation of blood mates was brought up twice, with two different reactions. One that the mate killed herself, the other that he didn’t have one…I’m slightly confused. Maybe I read it wrong, but it really threw the story off for me.</spoiler>

The romance was a beautiful line of this story, and I loved how Mari slowly introduced it. It wasn’t just sudden, and our character’s own pasts helped make the story a little more believable. It might not be a crazy realistic scenario (a 200 page story over a few days with vampires trying to kill someone. Please let me know if you’ve experienced this before so I can edit the review…) but it fit beautifully into the story. I really loved it.

I finished this book in about half an hour, I was that obsessed and couldn’t stop reading. I didn’t want to put it down, and I can’t wait for more books by Mari!! If there are more books in this series, I would be the happiest little reviewer in the world!! I would love to see more Sunny appear, since Rayne was visible in this story…But I’m not picky. Even just another book will fill my desires for more Blood Coven novels!

And we won’t have to wait to long…Dark and Stormy Vampire is next! And of course, as per usual, Mari leaves us off with a horrible cliff hanger! I swear Mari loves to torture us readers by leaving us with cliffhangers AND making us wait for more books…

Side Notes: Mari’s description of Logan is beautiful, but my recent obsession with Gilmore Girls can only see Logan Huntzberger. It oddly fits though…

Five out of five stars.

Thank you to Mari Mancusi and our epic Read and Review team for providing me a copy of this novel!! I can’t wait for the next one!!!

EXCERPT

I stand there for a moment, enjoy the view and letting my imagination fill in the blanks. But I want more than imagination, and so I peel off the nightgown and let it drop onto the floor. I don’t usually sleep in one unless there are guests in the house, but I’d been wearing it on the couch last night, and Damien hadn’t undressed me when he put me to bed.

Now, I stand naked and watch the shape of him move in the steam. I’d been aroused even before I entered this room, simply from the thought of him. But now, seeing him in this wet heat, my body is on overdrive. My nipples are hard, my sex clenching with need. I want his touch—and I damn well intend to have it.

His back is to me when I open the door, his face in the pounding water. I’ve let a wash of cool air in, though, and he turns to face me. As he does, I see the heat flare in his eyes. More interesting, though, is the way his cock hardens, the immediacy of his reaction making absolutely clear that Damien has no objections to my joining him here this morning.

He opens his mouth to say something, but I press a finger over his lips, then step closer. He’s almost finished his shower, so his body is no longer slick with soap. I consider that a good thing, because as I kiss his chest, he tastes fresh and clean.

I move slowly down, licking his skin, teasing the light smattering of hair on his chest. I flick my tongue over his nipple and am rewarded by the way he grabs my hair, his body stiffening beneath my hands that are sliding down his body, too, keeping time with the progress of my kisses.

I go lower, dropping to my knees as I reach his navel. His abs are rock hard and the muscles quiver under my lips. I can tell I’m driving him crazy, and he tightens his grip on my hair even as his other hand reaches for the side of the stall to steady himself.

Lower and lower, my lips teasing his skin, tracing that magical line of hair that leads from just below his navel all the way down to his cock. And when I reach it, thick and wet, I draw my tongue along the velvet steel as Damien moans under my ministrations.

With purposeful slowness, I lick around the head, then flick the end of my tongue over the tip, tasting the pre-come. Then I draw him in, and as I do, the hand that Damien has twined in my hair shifts to the back of my head. At first he just holds me steady, but as I suck in long, deep strokes, he groans with satisfaction and longing, and tightens his grip.

Right now, I’m the one in control, but I can feel that control slipping from me. No, not slipping. Damien is grabbing it by grabbing me—by holding tight to my hair and keeping me in place as he fucks my mouth, totally turning the tables on me.

But I don’t care. I’m too turned on to care, and as his cock fills my mouth and water pounds down over us, I slip my hand between my legs and touch myself, then whimper softly. I’m slick and swollen and so turned on it’s painful, and as I suck my husband’s cock, I tease myself, seeking release.

I’m close, too, so close I can feel electricity filling my body like an approaching thunderstorm. I can feel the tension building in Damien, too, and I know the explosion is coming.

Doesn’t matter. He pulls back, leaving my mouth open in surprise. Then he pulls me to my feet and turns me around, his hands gliding over my wet skin as he spins me. “Hands on the wall,” he demands, and I comply eagerly as his fingers slide over my ass to find my core. And then his cock is there, and he’s pounding inside of me, his hands tight on my breasts as he orders me to “finish what you started, baby. Touch yourself. I want to feel you come with me.”

I don’t hesitate, and as Damien’s wet body slaps against mine—as he thrusts deeper and deeper inside me—I tease my clit, feeling the shockwaves gather inside me, readying for an explosion.

And when Damien’s body goes rigid—when he thrusts hard that one final time—when he releases completely inside me, that’s when I finally go over, my deep cry of satisfaction ringing out in harmony with his as our bodies shake and quiver together from the force of our simultaneous release.

When the shockwaves have faded, he turns me gently in his arms, then rinses me off before shutting off the stream of warm water. He opens the door, and steam curls into the rest of the bathroom.

He leads me out onto the fluffy bathmat, then uses a thick, cotton towel to dry me off.

Only then do I lean my head back, smile, and speak to him for the first time. “Good morning, Mr. Stark.”

“Yes,” he says, matching my grin. “It is.”

Excerpt:

Later that night, I’m crawling into bed, my sketch pad in hand, when my phone rings. Brenna’s name flashes across the screen.

Shit.

I don’t want to answer, because I already know we’ll end up in another fight. And I’m sick of fighting. I push the button to ignore the call.

I’ve enjoyed my short time here in Heaven, and it isn’t necessarily because of Nova and Noah—although they play a big part. But I’ve enjoyed the quieter life. I’ve enjoyed exploring the little shops in town, getting to know the friendly locals, and seeing the potential all around me. I’m doing what I want when I want without having to answer to anyone. No publicist watching my every move, and no looking over my shoulder everywhere I go, wondering if the paparazzi are hiding around the corner, just waiting for me to screw something up. And I haven’t screwed anything up. I’ve made some mighty fine decisions—both business and personal—since I’ve been here, if I do say so myself.

My phone vibrates again, but this time when I look down, I smile.

Noah: How is your night going?

Me: Better now that I’m talking to you.

I snuggle into my covers, waiting for him to respond.

Noah: I was going to call, but I didn’t want to wake you up.

Me: I’m in bed, but you didn’t wake me up.

Noah: Now we’re getting somewhere. Bed, huh? What are you wearing?

I can’t help it, I grin.

Me: Am I supposed to be wearing something?

    Noah: Fuuuuuuck

Me: I can think of a few ways for you to come warm me up ; )

A few seconds later, my phone rings, and I pull it to my ear. “Hello?”

Noah growls. “You’re killing me.”

The sound of his voice is enough to send my body into overdrive. “In the best possible way though, right?” Because you’re killing me, too.

“You have no idea.”

I hear the sheets rustling, and I know he’s in bed. Oh, what I wouldn’t give to be there next to him.

“I think I have an idea.”

“Are you really naked?”

“Do you want me to be?”

“Damn,” he mumbles. “I would kill to be over there right now. You know that, don’t you? You know that if I didn’t have Nova here, I’d be there in a heartbeat.”

“I know.” My heart melts at his sweet words.

“I haven’t been inside of you in days.” His voice is low and raspy, his drawl much more prominent, something that happens when he’s turned on.

“Soon.”

“Really?” he admonishes. “Because I’m beginning to think it’ll never happen again.”

I chuckle. “You miss my body that much, huh?”

He’s silent for a few beats, and then he takes a deep breath and blows me away with his words.

“It’s more than your body, Lennon. It’s your scent and the way it wraps itself around me. It’s the way your eyes sparkle when you smile and the sound of your laughter throughout my house. And how you are with my daughter. You’re amazing with her. You’re gentle and kind and loving and… it’s everything. It’s you. I miss you.”

“Noah?”

“What?”

“Unlock your door.”

I end the call, and two seconds later, I’m hauling ass out the front door in my pajamas. When I hit the bottom step of his porch and find Noah half-naked in front of his open door, wearing nothing but a pair of low-slung sweats, I nearly lose my breath. I’m not sure if it’s the tattoos crawling up his arms, or the way he’s hanging on to the top of the door frame—it could even be his warm, brown eyes, which are eating me from top to bottom—but he looks different.

“What took you so long?” His slow, sexy grin pulls me in, and I walk straight into his open arms.

I pull my bottom lip between my teeth and smile. “I had to put clothes on.”

In an instant, Noah scoops me up, kicks the door shut, and is moving down his hall.

“Why the hell would you do something like that?”

Release Day Blitz: SHOPPING FOR A BILLIONAIRE’S HONEYMOON by JULIA KENT

About SHOPPING FOR A BILLIONAIRE’S HONEYMOON

He is addicted to his phone and his new role as CEO. I’m addicted to getting some on my own honeymoon.

One of these things is not like the other.

I am pretty sure a serial killer’s lair is the only place in the world where I could stash my new husband so he can’t manage the acquisition of our new company.

And that seems a little drastic.

But only a little…

All I want is one week alone with him. Hours in bed, legs tangled together in ecstasy, room service and long walks on the beach in Hawaii.

Not vying for his kisses around a Bluetooth microphone. The Borg aren’t sexy in real life.

So I’m taking matters into my own hands and hitting “reboot” on our honeymoon.

We’re going to a place so remote that no one can find us.

Not even my mother.

Shopping for a Billionaire’s Honeymoon is now a full-length book of 150+ pages, with both Shannon and Declan’s points of view. Originally published with only Shannon’s viewpoint, this expanded edition is a result of reader feedback. People wanted to know what Declan was up to – so here you go. This book is meant to be read after Shopping for a Billionaire’s Wife and/or Shopping for a CEO’s Fiancée, but if you read it out of order (or even as a standalone), that’s fine. Shannon and Declan forgive you. 😉

And now for a little sneak peak!!!….

My entire business empire rests in the hands of a man who just got dropped because my wife threw him in the toilet.

But other hands are resting on me. Moving on me. Stroking me over my clothes, pulling me out of the zone. The blue chemical water is a turnoff, but those hands…

Damn her.

Damn fine.

Business is my life. Giving in to baser urges is also my life. I’m a man.

My palm finds her knee, gliding up over those firm, sweet thighs, finding them bare and smooth, perfect for inhaling. Her skin is its own perfume, the swell of her hip crying out for a firm hand. I entwine the thin fabric of her garter – oh, sweet Jesus, it is so warm — between my fingers, grasping at it as if I’m playing tug of war with myself.

Stay in the business zone and hold steady.

Pull hard on the lifeline Shannon’s garters represent, and join her erotic zone.

I have to make a decision. I’m torn.

So are Shannon’s garters now. Oops.

Decision made.

“Hey!” she squeals, her voice going to that timbre that says the words that are about to come out of her mouth mean the opposite of what she feels. “You can’t tear my clothes off like that!”

“I can, and I will.”

“Declan!”

“Didn’t you catch that line in the wedding vows at our ceremony yesterday? ‘I, Shannon Eveline Jacoby, do promise to let my faithful husband rip off my lacy lingerie at will.’”

“I don’t remember that line.”

“Let me help you remember.”

Before she can answer, I shut her up with a kiss.

Book Review: My Married Boyfriend by Cydney Rax

28698555

Photo via Goodreads.

In honor of Cydney Rax’s third novel in The Love and Revenge series (Revenge of the Mistress), here’s my review for My Married Boyfriend (the second novel in the series).

Title: My Married Boyfriend
Author: Cydney Rax
Date Read: September 11th – September 28th, 2016
Date Reviewed: September 28th, 2016

Introduction: I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads. I wanted to read a soap-opera style novel with lots of love, angst and drama, and I definitely found it! My Married Boyfriend is the second of  three novels by Cydney Rex in this series. The book was easy to pick up without reading the first novel, but there were some aspects of the novel that took me some time to connect (Rashad’s mistresses and their children). Reading the first novel would be easier for the reader, but you can easily pick this book up and figure it out as you go along.

Spoilers Ahead?: Yes.

Quick Summary: Rashad has many women in his life, and a lot of drama as well. His wife kicked him out, leaving him unable to see Myles or Kiara in all her pregnant glory. Alexis, and his daughter Hayley, are friends with Kiara. And of course, his other mistress Nicole wants to marry him and is pregnant with his child. This novel follows mainly Nicole, but Rashad, Kiara and Alexis as well.

Evaluations: I found this novel to have a fast moving pace, but it lacked in sophistication. I found this book almost to easy to read, and the twists and turns that happened were far to obvious. This book is definitely great if you want to turn your brain off and read a steamy yet dramatic romance, but it’s not for anyone who’s looking for a sophisticated or complicated read. I found myself loving some chapters and hating others, and it became a love-hate relationship with the novel. But, that’s of course, just my opinion. Looking at other reviews, readers who are into romance and soap operas LOVED this novel. I am not a major fan of romance/soap opera styled stories, I enjoy reading them in between my psychological thrillers, horror and young adult sprees.

Plot: The plot is fairly simple – Rashad has children with three women, and he has to juggle them. Kiara is his wife that he is divorcing, and she is pregnant (possibly with his child). Alexis is his baby mama and she has Hayley who is about two years old. Nicole, who is a little crazy, is currently pregnant with his child. Oh, and all three work together in Kiara’s office. The plot follows your typical soap opera plot line – Rashad potentially cheating, Kiara keeping his kid away from him and keeping the father of the child a secret, Nicole cheating on Rashad, Rashad finding out, and so on. It’s incredibly easy to follow, and it’s slightly predictable. That being said, it was never dull. The plot kept me interested and I didn’t want to put the book down. Often with romances I want to put the book down and take a break. Yet, I was able to truck along through this novel.

Characters: Rashad was not my favourite lead male. He has three women he is trying to keep relationships with and sometimes he treats them horribly. I felt like he was the weakest point, when he could have been the strongest.

Nicole being crazy seemed like the obvious trophe that could have happened. Rashad breaks up with his wife and his baby mama for a crazy woman who is having his baby. I have seen this on television a lot, but not in print. It was an interesting take, but I didn’t enjoy seeing Nicole as constantly crazy. I would have liked her to been crazy for a reason, and to have moments where I felt bad for her, yet I didn’t. When bad things happened to Nicole I felt like she had it coming, because it was set up that way.

Kiara & Alexis – These women were the strongest points of this novel, and they weren’t in it all that much. Kiara was a very strong lead woman for being in a supporting role. I enjoyed her aspect of the story, since she seemed human. Unlike Nicole, I felt for Kiara when negative turns approached her. I had strong emotions for her. I would have liked Nicole to be written in a similar fashion to her. Alexis was also a strong character, but she was clearly a secondary character and was only used for plot movement. She could have been used more in this novel, and I hope she’d more involved in the third (and first novel, which I haven’t picked up yet).

Themes/Creativity: Creativity wise this novel is great. I have rarely seen the soap opera norm of man having a child with a crazy woman in print. I enjoyed reading it, but I felt like Nicole was positioned to be the bad guy. Overall, it was creative and kept my hooked.

For themes, soap opera type novels rarely seem to have them. If you picked apart this novel you might be able to try to piece some together, but I don’t think Cydney Rax intended for there to be any strict themes.

Uniqueness: In the category of unique, having a diverse cast was nice. I felt like the book was a little to stereotypical and could have been written better in that sense since the novel had a diverse cast of characters. It’s pretty typical for a soap opera type novel, but as I’ve said, in print it’s done a great job of translating it over. I could see this novel becoming a television series such as Desperate Housewives or the many reality television shows that are currently on air.

Strengths: Kiara and Alexis – strong female leads are always great!

Weaknesses: Rashad and Nicole – these two characters were stereotypical and did not make me feel for them, which they should have. They were our main characters!

Score: 2 out of 5. I expected so much more out of this novel, and I felt that it lacked in many areas. Our leads left me without emotions for them, our diverse cast was written to be stereotypical of their ethnicity, and the writing style felt like it was meant to be a very easy read. I did love Kiara and Alexis, and I also loved how quick this novel moved, but the negatives out weighed the positives for me in this novel. That being said, I’d like to read more by Cydney Rax. She seems to know how to write drama, and I’d like to see her grow as she writes more.
